The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has long prioritized the protection of children in war zones through its Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC) agenda.
Since 1996, this initiative has focused on monitoring grave human rights violations and ensuring that international law protects the most vulnerable during wartime.
The Council formally monitors six specific crimes, including the recruitment of child soldiers, attacks on schools and hospitals, and the denial of humanitarian aid.
A key tool in this effort is the Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism (MRM), which gathers objective data on these abuses.
Despite these efforts, recent years have seen a staggering increase in violence against children, often due to urban warfare.
With the global community increasingly concerned about the impunity enjoyed by attackers, the UNSC continues to push for stronger accountability and better reintegration programs to help survivors recover.
Protecting children remains a vital, evolving challenge for international peace and security.
