Ontario increases speed limits on major highways

Starting in June 2026, drivers in Ontario will notice a significant change on the road.
The provincial government is officially raising speed limits from 100 km/h to 110 km/h across a massive portion of the highway network.
By the end of September 2026, nearly 89% of Ontario's provincial highways will feature this higher limit, up from just 43% previously.
This change affects major routes like the 400, 401, and the QEW.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria notes that these highways were originally built to accommodate higher speeds safely, with modern engineering standards supporting the transition.
The goal is to improve efficiency for commuters and commercial transport, potentially saving drivers significant time on long trips.
For instance, travel between Toronto and Ottawa could be shortened by about 30 minutes.
While the move aligns Ontario with other provinces, it has sparked debate.
Proponents praise the increased productivity, but some safety organizations worry about potential risks, such as higher collision severity.
Importantly, the rules for 'stunt driving' remain strict: driving 50 km/h over the new limit will still result in serious charges.
Officials emphasize that consistent enforcement will remain a priority as these new limits roll out.
