Starting July 1, 2026, Medicare is launching the GLP-1 Bridge Program, a significant 18-month pilot project aimed at improving access to weight-loss medications.
For years, federal law prohibited Medicare from covering drugs solely for weight management.
This new demonstration project changes that by providing coverage for specific GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, including Wegovy, Zepbound, and Foundayo.
To participate, beneficiaries must have Medicare Part D coverage and meet specific clinical criteria based on Body Mass Index (BMI) and pre-existing health conditions.
By testing this new coverage pathway, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) hopes to gather crucial data on clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness.
This pilot, which runs through December 31, 2027, represents a major policy shift and may pave the way for long-term changes in how Medicare handles obesity treatment.
It offers a vital opportunity for seniors to access evidence-based care that was previously out of reach.
